Through a multi-year process of strategic planning, Normal Fire Department determined that the current facilities and the location of these facilities do not adequately meet the requirements for emergency response services for the Town of Normal. With this process, it became evident that a new centralized headquarters facility was needed to accommodate the needs of our community.
In addition to this, it was determined that our oldest station (Station 2) was no longer in adequate condition or large enough to serve its surrounding area. After determining the areas most served and traffic patterns, it was decided that this station needed to be closer in proximity to Illinois State University, which accounts for a large increase in call volume during the school year.
Completed in October of 2017, the 26,000 square foot building features a large training room, a commercial-grade kitchen, administration and prevention offices, a training stair tower / hose drying tower, and a fire pole to the apparatus floor from the second floor living quarters.
