Special Interest Programs

High School Summer Theater

Students entering 9th-12th grades will have the opportunity to participate in one of the finest high school theater groups in downstate Illinois! Our mission is to provide local high school students the opportunity to practice their craft in an outdoor community setting. Tryouts are held in May for summer productions.

International Lifeguard Training Program

This Lifeguard Certification class is for certification purposes only for teens 15 and older. Participants must pass a swimming/skills test on the first day to continue in the class. Participants must be able to swim 200 yds. (8 lengths) continuously, tread water for one minute (without using their hands) and retrieve a diving brick (approximately 10 pounds) from 12 feet. Participants will learn the water rescue, CPR, AED and First Aid skills required to be a lifeguard. This Ellis & Associates training program offers the most comprehensive lifeguard training available. Potential lifeguards for the summer may be selected from this class. Classes are offered in March, April, June and July.

Jr. Swim Instructor

Teens age 11-15 learn what it takes to teach swim lessons. Participants will learn the basic skills of the Red Cross Learn to Swim program, how they are taught and how to be an effective swim instructor assistant. Some students, who complete all of the class, may be selected to volunteer with actual Parks and Recreation Learn to Swim classes.

Safe Sitter

Offered to teens 11-13, this class is a babysitting preparation program designed for boys and girls. Topics include babysitting as a business, success on the job, childcare essentials, safety for the sitter, injury management, preventing problem behavior and care of choking infant and child.
