Fire Damages Garage at Ironwood Gardens Apartments

NORMAL  –   Firefighters made a rapid attack on a fire that broke out in a nine-unit tenant garage at a major apartment complex yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a direct call-in report of a fire in a detached garage at the Ironwood Gardens Apartments complex at 2000 N. Linden Street just before 4:00pm yesterday.    Firefighters arrived a few minutes later and found heavy smoke coming from the south end of the 9-car detached garage and began firefighting efforts.   Garage doors were cut or removed to gain access to the fire and a ventilation hole was cut in the roof to prevent the fire from spreading further down the building.    The fire was brought under control in about 25 minutes, but firefighters remained on the scene for another hour extinguishing hot spots.    Fire investigators worked at the scene for another hour or so before the building was turned over to Ironwood Gardens Apartments.

“We received a direct call-in for this fire, which means someone called one of our fire stations on the business line to report it.   If there is a fire, or if you need to report any emergency – don’t wait!  Call 9-1-1 immediately,” said Matt Swaney, Normal Fire Department Public Information Officer.

Swaney adds, “Every minute a fire is burning, it doubles in size, so if it takes you two or three minutes to look up a phone number to call, that fire has already doubled in size two or three times.  Worse yet, if the firefighters in that station were out on another call, your phone call could potentially go unanswered and cause additional delays to our response.”

Due to the cold temperatures and extended operation, off-duty Normal firefighters were called in to staff fire stations to handle any other calls for service during this incident.

Fire damage was isolated to the southern-most garage stall, but smoke traveled throughout the remainder of the building through the common attic space.

There were no injuries.  There is no damage estimate at this time.

The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.
