Discussion Group Process
Committee members shared how they have been progressing with
their discussion groups.
DW – For his discussion group, they did not feel it was necessary
for the discussion group to have lots of background information
(such as the Steering Committee is receiving) and focus on strengths
or weaknesses. Planning on 3 meetings with group. Inviting 11 to
participate and hope to have 7-8 in attendance. True cross-section
of community is optimal. Would hope that some of them would be serving
on sub-committees but won’t introduce that possibility right away,
so they don’t get “scared off.”
KA – Will have one “meet and greet” session but most of dialogue
done electronically. Membership of their discussion group reflects
international perspective as well as long-term residents and newer
residents. Concerned about too much “pie in the sky” and not enough
concrete.
JC – Effectively these reports have become 5 yr report because they
are updated every 5 yrs. If we come around to the idea that these
are 5 yr reports then things will be more concrete. Suggest “quick
starts” at the end of the report – for example, if a goal in the
report is to support light rail, a “quick start” would be to hire
a consultant to study potential community use.”
Difficult to think 25 yrs out – easier to think 5 yrs out and
what demands will be.
Easier to present opportunities in next 10 yrs.
-Try to look at how things were when you moved here and what things
have changed. Instead of thinking in terms of 30 yrs think in terms
of next generations.
JC – Plan to use Post-it Notes in process – each member will think about 5-10 opportunities and reduce to a phrase that can fit on a Post-it note. Put Post-it notes on the wall, they fall into natural categories, are done when no one wants to move a note around anymore.
There is a value to building off of the high points of the past reports (but this time process is different)
Encourage discussion group members to drive around Town and look at things. This is fine as long as understand that this doesn’t touch all aspects of concern.
Send out press release with list of amended committee members.
Next meeting will be January 27th at 7:00 p.m. in Conference Room C
