Police Services Representative

SHIFT: TUESDAY - SATURDAY 11 PM - 7 AM

Distinguishing features of work:

The Police Service Representative is responsible for various law enforcement/administrative support in addition to providing services to the public. This is accomplished through face-to-face, phone and radio communication. One must be able to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously while exhibiting professional communication and customer service skills. One must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, and demonstrate reasonable latitude in selecting appropriate procedural methods in addressing each situation as it arises. This position reports to the shift supervisor.

Examples of work performed:

  • Monitor/transmit non-emergency radio traffic, assign accident; incident and non-criminal report numbers to officers in the field as needed.
  • Answer multi-line phone calls from the public, other law enforcement/social service agencies and resolve/direct calls accordingly.
  • Prepare minor incident, supplemental, accident and other reports as requested.
  • Assist individuals who walk-in to the facility in need of services and be able to address their needs/concerns, whatever they may be.
  • Monitor/operate four computer systems: In-house main frame; EJS; CAD; and LEADS.
  • Provide informational support to all officers, supervisors and other internal/external departments with the Town of Normal and outside agencies.
  • Answer McLean County Crime Stoppers line. Assign tip number to caller. Record accurate and detailed information and direct the report to the appropriate supervisor/police agency. (When housed at Normal P.D.)
  • Aid citizens/businesses in obtaining services offered by the police department. Extra-patrol; vacation checks; parking permission; finger-printing for employment purposes; amplified sound permits and mass gathering permits.
  • May be required to appear in court to testify regarding reports taken while on duty.
  • Call/page various individuals, departments and support agencies as any given situation requires.
  • Register sex offenders and take their picture for NPD records department.
  • Handle cash for bond exchange. Log in bank bags for various Town of Normal facilities.
  • Work weekends and holidays. (Holidays off are shift supervisor's discretion.)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to learn to operate all required law enforcement electronic and communications equipment (In-house records system, CAD, EJS, LEADS, and Radio) Successfully complete and pass LEADS Certification in six months.
  • Ability to consider multiple demands, prioritize and take appropriate action.
  • Working knowledge of the corporate limits and streets of the Town of Normal and the surrounding vicinity.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Above average oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and treat everyone in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of the law and law enforcement procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of police information.
  • Ability to work regular/irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays and extended hours in emergency or staffing/heavy work load situations.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Some college classes in criminal justice; helpful but not required.
  • Attend Citizens Police Academy within 1 year; helpful but not required.
  • Some computer experience and skill strongly preferred.
  • LEADS certification within six months; mandatory. Failure will lead to termination.
  • Positive, professional attitude.
  • Customer Service oriented experience preferred.
  • Some clerical experience preferred.
  • Be a team player.

Selection Process

  • Interested applicants should complete an employment application on the Town’s website or obtain an employment application from Human Resources, 100 E. Phoenix Avenue, Normal.
  • Completed applications will be accepted till 5 PM Friday April 4, 2008.
  • A criminal history and polygraph examination will be part of the selection process.
