This year’s Fall Forum will feature Marina Balina, Illinois Wesleyan University professor of Russian/German. Her co-authored book, “Politicizing Magic” was published in 2005. This anthology of Russian folk and fairy tales takes a fresh look at the way in which history and government have shaped the telling and retelling of traditional Russian stories. During the Soviet period the subtext was highly developed and readers learned how to read between the lines. This program will include illustrations of pre-and post- revolutionary fairy tales as the mysteries of politicizing folk tales are unraveled.
