Definition

Bulky waste refers to large items that cannot fit into your household waste garbage cart. Bulky waste is collected each week on your regular garbage collection day.

Instructions for Collection
  • The total weight of items placed at the curb should be no more than 500 lbs.  A private waste collection contractor should be contacted for larger amounts.
  • Items should be placed loose at the curb and not in a box or non-Town garbage cart/can.
  • Items should be placed 3 or more feet from garbage and recycling carts, landscape waste, brush, leaves, mailboxes, utility poles, overhead wires and other obstructions.
  • Cardboard, when included with bulky waste, should be flattened first. We encourage residents to recycle cardboard by breaking it down and placing it in their recycle cart or taking it to one of the Town's several recycle centers.
  • Place bulky waste curbside after 6:00 pm the day prior to collection or before 6:00 am on your regular collection day.
  • On sloped right of ways, place bulky waste lengthwise or parallel to the street.  This helps the operator pick up the items with little or no damage to the right of way.

Items that should not be included in bulky waste:
  • Bags of garbage - bags of garbage should be placed in a Town-issued garbage cart for household waste collection.
  • Shingles - contact a private firm or a landfill for proper disposal.
  • Landscape rock - However, small amounts may be included with household waste or curbside on a piece of disposable plastic or a piece of plywood (the plywood will be taken with the rocks).
  • Electronics - state law requires that certain electronics be recycled. This includes TV’s, stereo and computer equipment, VCR’s, fax machines, DVD players/recorders and scanners.  See the Electronics Recycling page for a complete list.
  • Material from work done by contractors.

Items that will be collected curbside (for example):

  • Refrigerators and freezers - please remove the door(s).
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Furniture
  • Old garbage and waste cans will be collected if you call the office first (454-9571)
  • Mattresses
  • Boards (please remove nails or place the points down for safety)

Commercial Dumpsters
Property owners must rent a commercial dumpster from a private firm when they:
  • Are doing major renovations, such as re-roofing
  • Are removing and replacing concrete driveways and sidewalks
  • Have debris exceeding 500 pounds
